Caring for Your Hair in Mombasa's Humidity

21 May 2026 · Skincare by Sandra

The coastal climate is beautiful, but it is tough on hair. Mombasa's humidity, strong sun and salty sea air can leave strands dry and brittle on the ends while frizzy and unmanageable on top. The key is to lock in moisture and protect your hair from the elements. With a little consistent care, you can keep your hair soft, strong and shiny all year round.

Moisturise regularly

Humidity in the air does not mean your hair is hydrated — in fact, the heat draws moisture out of the strand. Use a good leave-in conditioner and a light hair oil to seal that moisture in. A few drops of hair oil smoothed over damp ends tames frizz and adds healthy shine without weighing hair down.

Protect from sun and salt

The sun and salty sea air on the coast are very drying. On beach days, wear a hat or use a protective spray, and rinse your hair with clean water after swimming so salt does not sit on the strands and dry them out.

Be gentle when you style

Always detangle from the ends upward to avoid breakage, and use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair. Avoid very tight styles every single day — constant tension stresses the hairline and edges over time. Give your scalp regular breaks with looser styles.

Wash wisely and trim often

In the heat you may want to wash more often, but over-washing strips natural oils. Choose a gentle shampoo and focus the cleansing on your scalp. Regular trims stop split ends travelling up the strand, keeping hair looking thick and healthy.
